Comments and discussion

In this section of the study guide, we will give you some suggestions on things you might want to discuss and comment upon in Barack Obama’s speech on reclaiming the American Dream. Keep in mind that you should always justify your opinion and that you should avoid making emotional responses.

You could choose to comment on Barack Obama's use of personal examples to support his arguments. He talks about his grandparents, parents, and father-in-law and highlights the way in which their sacrifices have shaped the person who he is today:

These are dreams that drove my mother. A single mom - even while relying on food stamps as she finished her education, she followed her passion for helping others, and raised my sister and me to believe that in America there are no barriers to success - no matter what color you are, no matter where you're from, no matter how much money you have. (ll. 29-33)

What kind of effect do you think these examples have on the audience? Do you think they help Obama come across as more approachable and more aware of the needs of the average citizen?
