Summary

“A Place in the Sun” by Joanne Harris begins with a short statement about exclusive beaches in Brazil which ban the old, the ugly, and the overweight.  

It continues with the protagonist’s statement that she wants a place at the Platinum Sands™, an exclusive beach.

The protagonist only has access to Silver Sands™, a beach with lower standards. The beach is close to the All-Public beach, where everyone has access. Tanya, a girl from the protagonist’s old neighbourhood, has had a lot of plastic surgery done and is waiting for access to the Silver beach, but the narrator doesn’t think she will be successful.

The protagonist would like to help her but she can’t because people might talk or she might be downgraded. She is also busy getting beauty treatments and working out to pass a daily Loveli...
