Speaker

The speaker of the “We Shall Fight on the Beaches” is Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. He was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955.

A former war correspondent and writer, Churchill was first elected to Parliament as a Conservative in 1900. Four years later, he became an Independent and soon afterwards joined the Liberals but returned to the Conservative Party (also known as “Tories”, the oldest party in the United Kingdom) in 1924. Churchill remained a Conservative until his death in 1965. Formed in the 1830s as a right-of-centre party, the Conservatives in the UK generally promote democracy, the free-market, military strength, and minimal intervention by the government in society, while accepting some aspects of the welfare state (supporting some of the costs for health, employment, social security, and education).
