Characters

The short story “Waiting for Her” by Amina Henry features five characters: Victory, Tommy, Jay, the grandmother, and the mother. Victory is the narrator of the story and its main character. The other four characters are secondary and relevant for the way Victory relates to them. In our analysis, we will focus on characterizing Victory, but we will also give you a few points regarding the mother and the grandmother.

Victory's characterization is mostly conveyed directly in the form of self-characterization, but also indirectly through her actions and thoughts.

The grandmother is a secondary character in the story, whose characterization is constructed using the narrator’s perspective or through her actions and statements.

The mother is also a secondary character, absent from most of the direct action of the plot. However, she is important for the way the narrator relates to her. Most of her characterization is conveyed using Victory’s perspective.
