Dissatisfaction
One of the main themes explored by Raymond Carver in the short story “Vitamins” is the theme of dissatisfaction. Almost all the characters of the story are, in one way or another, dissatisfied with their lives.
The narrator’s dissatisfaction prevents him from developing an emotional connection with his wife. When Patti complains about her miserable life, the narrator tries to change the subject, which shows that he is detached and unable to understand her perspective. Patti, who is initially excited about her vitamin business, becomes frustrated and dissatisfied and cannot deal with her job. She has nightmares about it and feels trapped in her life:
