Narrator and point of view

The novel excerpt “Tuesday” by Bret Easton Ellis is told from the perspective of a first-person narrator, who is also the main character, Patrick Bateman. 

The narrator is observant and he focuses on a lot of details, providing a thorough account of the events that take place. From the beginning, Patrick gives a very detailed description of what he is wearing. He also comments on what others are wearing: “I bump into Courtney by the stairs. Wearing a silk and cotton stretch- tulle body wrap with jeweled lace pants, she seems tense and warns me to stay away from Luis”. In this example, the narrator focuses on her clothes, ignoring what Courtney is saying.
