When you analyze James Hamblin’s article “Trump is a Climax of American Masculinity”, you should also consider those statements that are particularly interesting or controversial.

At the start of his article, Hamblin references a double standard in American society: “Hillary Clinton has been criticized over an absent smile. For the same thing, a man can be respected.” (ll. 9-11). This highlights the fact that women and men are judged differently for displaying emotion. Consider whether this is true and whether you can think of any other examples. Remember that arguments for or against the writer’s statement should always be delivered by providing explanations based on facts.

It could be interesting to debate the meaning of the concept “masculine culture”, as the writer does not explain it. Consider why the writer does not explain this. You could argue that it is because his article is aimed at readers who are already familiar with the meaning of this phrase. On the other hand, this could reflect the writer’s deeper belief that masculine culture is already such an obvious problem that it does not require an explanation.
