Theme and message

The theme of the short story “The Voice of The People” by Alison Moore is the dangers of resignation. All the people in the story, and even the animals appear resigned to the point that they do not put up a fight even when they are in mortal danger. 

The title of the story references the old Latin proverb Vox Populi, Vox Dei, which translates as “the voice of the people is the voice of god.” The saying is often used in a political context to mean that in a democracy, it is the majority that gets to decide on a course of action. In a social context, which also applies to this story, it means that people should be free to speak their mind and protest or criticize the authorities if they do not agree with their actions. It also suggests that the authorities should listen to the people and their complaints.
