Summary

The short story “The Voice of The People” by Alison Moore is about a woman named Glenda, who lives in an industrial village. One morning she drives out to buy weedkiller for the garden and almost runs over a pigeon which does not move out of the way of the car. Her husband, Dougie, is supposed to look after their garden, but he is too tired from his work at the factory.

Everyone in the village hates the factory, even though  most of the men work there. However, all who work there lose their energy to do anything else. The women become worried about pollution from the factory. They think it is a health hazard for the entire village.

Glenda wrote a letter to the council about the factory and received no answer. She decided to organize a protest, along with other women from the village. They held several meetings and made placards. The protest is scheduled for later in the day.
