Analysis

Here are the major points we will talk about in our analysis of “The Tree of War” by Tanya Datta

The story only partly follows a traditional plot structure, having an exposition, a rising action, and a climax. The falling action and the resolution are missing.  Moreover, the author relies on narrative techniques such as in media res, narrative hook, flashback, foreshadowing, and cliff-hanger.

We will offer a few ideas that can help you characterise Krishna, the main character, as well as his relationship with his father. Krishna is a young boy whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of his estranged father, who disrupts the harmony the boy and his mother lived in before.

The story is set in North London, probably during the 1980s or early 1990s. The social setting touches upon the life of immigrants, social conflicts, and faulty family relationships.

Krishna is the narrator of the story. This aspect is also mirrored in the language of the story, most of the narration being influenced by a child-like enthusiasm, excitement, and exaggeration.
