Presentation of the topic
For many years there has been an ongoing debate over the fact that Oscar nominations and Hollywood, in general, fail to reflect the ethnic diversity of society, leading to accusations that Hollywood indirectly promotes discrimination. The debate reached a peak in 2016, when only white actors were nominated for the best actor/actress awards, prompting African-American film directors, screen writers, and actors to protest and to boycott the Academy Awards by not attending the event. The articles in your exam set focus on this topic and reflect different attitudes towards the fact that the film industry fails to mirror American society.
