The narrator

The narrator is also the main character in the short story “The North London Book of the Dead” by Will Self. His outer characterization reveals that he is “bachelor” (p. 113, l. 7), probably in his forties (p. 113, l. 8). He works in an office (p. 119, ll. 35-36), but there are no details given about his job. The narrator also has two brothers (p. 126, ll. 33-34), but the reference to the “collection of children” (p. 115, l. 7) his mother had could suggest that he probably has more siblings. 

The narrator’s inner characterization shows that he has a close, but tense relationship with his mother, as suggested by the following example: “I felt that I had lost an adversary. Someone to test myself against. My greatest fan and my severest critic and above all a good talker, who I was only just getting to know ...
