Pathos

Pathos is also an important form of appeal in the article, as it helps Fearn illustrate the human consequences of poverty. A clear example of pathos can be found in the following example, where Fearn presents the human consequences of extreme poverty:

The reality for those families is something far more tangible and brutal: it’s a toddler sleeping on damp sheets because a flat is too cold to prevent condensation seeping into every belonging; it’s a child crying from hunger and a parent eating just one meal a day to make sure their child has as much as they can offer; it’s a mother leaving her young children alone after school to work a third job just to try to keep up with the cost of living. (ll. 42-46)

Here, Fearn appeals to readers’ compassion for the poor people inBritain. More indirectly, it also appeals to outrage at the government that allows such things to happen.

Fearn also builds pathos through the use of negative words and expressions, which criticize and blame the government for its actions. For example, she talks about the “abyss” (l. 33) of poverty, and about the “willful ignorance” (l. 53) and “political neglect” (l. 57) of officials who have a different view on destitution in the UK.
