Modes of appeal

In the article “The New Nomads: Living Full-Time on the Road”, Jessica Bruder mainly uses logos and pathos as modes of appeal.

Logos

The article contains some examples of appeal to logos (trying to convince the receiver rationally). For example, Bruder presents statistical evidence towards the end of the article:

The top 1 percent now makes 81 times what those in the bottom half do, when you compare average earnings. For American adults on the lower half of the income ladder − some 117 million of them − earnings haven’t changed since the 1970s. (ll. 65-67)

Bruder uses data related to income to show how American society is divided by the wage gap, but also to show how income inequality disadvantages the poorer population. 

Logos is also used when Bruder compares America with other nations where income inequality exists: “Today, the United States has ...
