Though "The Larder" was written in 1984, its message has only grown more relevant in the years since its publication. 

In 1981, the Great Barrier Reef was included on the World Heritage List, meaning that it is recognized as a natural site of universal value to humanity, and one of the places on Earth that humankind has committed to protect for future generations. Besides containing one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, coral reefs are also important for human life. For example, the Great Barrier Reef has an important role in the Australian economy, through fishing and tourism, and other resources it provides. Coral reefs also protect coastlines from strong waves and storms, and contribute to the purification of water and air.
