Gwendolen

Gwendolen is an important character in the play The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.

Gwendolen has a high opinion of herself and is confident in her own abilities. She thinks that she is never wrong, yet she hopes that she is not perfect, as this would leave no room for further developments and she intends “to develop in many directions” (Act 1). She confidently states that her first impressions of people is never wrong, although she changes her mind about Cecily several times in the same day.
