Book two of The Circle by Dave Eggers begins when Mae is showing her viewers a new species of shark which has been brought back from the deep sea by a submersible designed by The Circle. Mae’s new job is to show her viewers life at The Circle, which has a new but mysterious goal of achieving “Completion”. Mae loves being transparent and feeling that her viewers care about her. Kalden calls her and tells her that Completion should never happen because it will be bad for humanity. Mae hangs up on him.

Mae visits different departments in The Circle and shows her viewers the work they are doing on education, where every student can be compared to others on local, national, and international levels. Mae then interviews Francis, who explains how children are given an implanted chip that tracks their location but also their educational ranking and other data.
