Narrator and point of view

The Circle by Dave Eggers is narrated by a third-person narrator who follows the perspective of the main character, Mae Holland. The narrator has limited knowledge and only has access to information that Mae knows. As readers, we get to know about The Circle through Mae’s experiences of working there. 
The narrator also has access to Mae’s thoughts and feelings: “Mae punched Francis in the arm, knowing she was flirting, knowing it was idiotic to flirt with a fellow Circler on her first night […]. But she was doing all those things and was happy about it.” (p. 37). The thoughts and feelings of other characters are shown only through their words and actions, or through Mae’s interpretation of their behavior: “ ‘I’m so jealous you know her so well,’ Gina said, smil...
