Beginning
The exposition introduces readers to Monica Swinton and David and the physical setting of their home. Details such as the permanent summer, the presence of plastic gravel and a machinery called the mowervator (ll. 1-8) suggest that the action takes place in a futuristic setting.
A tension point is created as the narrator hints that the relationship between Monica and David is strained: “She had tried to love him.” (l. 10). These details also function as narrative hooks as they stir readers’ curiosity without revealing many details about what is happening.
