Steve Jobs begins his Commencement Address at Stanford University by saying he is honored to be invited to give his speech. He says he will tell the audience three stories from his life.

Jobs says the first story is about connecting the dots and about his college career. He starts by talking about his biological mother, who put him up for adoption with the condition that he be adopted by parents who had graduated from college. The couple who was initially going to adopt him decided after his birth that they wanted to adopt a girl, so a new couple offered to adopt him. Jobs’ biological mother did not want to let them adopt him at first because they had not graduated college, but in the end she gave in, and the parents promised they would ensure Jobs went to college.
