Why people love watching horror movies

King begins his essay by hinting at a response to the original question in the title “Why We Crave Horror Movies”: “I think that we’re all mentally ill” (l. 1). According to King, people are attracted to horror because they provide psychic relief for their unexpressed madness:

It may be that horror movies provide psychic relief on this level because this invitation to lapse into simplicity, irrationality and even outright madness is extended so rarely. We are told we may allow our emotions a free rein . . . or no rein at all. (ll. 41-44)

King further supports his statement by explaining the dynamics of emotional expression: “Our emotions and our fears form their own body, and we recognize that it demands its own exercise to maintain proper muscle tone.” (ll. 58-60).
