The daughter

The daughter is the main character in Amanthi Harris' short story, “Red Sari”. Her outer characterisation suggests that she is originally from Sri Lanka (p. 105, l. 32), but that she was probably raised in the UK (p. 110, ll. 5-9). She is about to marry Andrew, whose name suggests that he is a Westerner.

The daughter’s physical portrait is conveyed by comparison with a model wearing a wedding dress in a magazine: “…small and young and she had dark curly hair like me.” (p. 104, ll. 2-3).

The daughter’s inner characterisation is conveyed through her thoughts, actions, and attitude in relation to her culture, her mother, Andrew, and other characters.

However, she cannot dismiss her dream either, as the image of the picture with her dream wedding dress keeps reappearing in her mind: “But how ever far I walked she did not disappear, or maybe I was lingering really, not going away, watching her, seeing her smiling face.” (p. 105, ll. 6-8); “…and there was the woodland and the woman in her pale shift smiling and humming to herself in the cool of the trees.” (p. 109, ll. 10-12)

In the Asian shopping area, the daughter’s attitude suggests she would like to have a better relationship with her mother, but she does not believe she can: “…how she and I might be able to talk together as she had with them.” (p. 105 ll. 32-34) “Did they ever sit like us? I wondered. With nothing to say?” (p. 106, ll. 14-15)
