Characters

The story “The Highest Branch on the Tree” by Ray Bradbury features two important characters: Douglas Spaulding and Harry Hands/Hinds. Additionally, the story mentions the collective character of the school boys who bullied Harry, whom the narrator represents (as he was one of them).

Douglas Spaulding is the first-person narrator of the story and one of the main characters. We will present you his traits both as a teenager and an adult, forty years later. We will consider his actions, thoughts, and feeling and focus on the guilt that accompanied him since his adolescence.

Harry Hinds is the second main character of the short story. His characterization is conveyed using the narrator’s perspective and by presenting his actions and his attitude.
