Molly Craig

Outer characterization

Molly Craig is the main character of the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) directed by Phillip Noyce. She is a fourteen-year-old girl from the Martu Aboriginal community in Jigalong, where she lives with her mother Maude, her grandmother, her half-sister Daisy and her cousin Gracie. Her father is a white man who works on the rabbit-proof fence, which makes Molly a mixed-race child.

After her return from Moore River, Molly gets married and has two daughters. She and her children are taken back to Moore River, and Molly escapes again with her youngest child, Annabelle. Neville later brings Annabelle back to Moore River, and Molly never sees her again. Molly lives in Jigalong with her half-sister Daisy into old age.

The character of Molly Craig is a fictional portrayal of the real-life Molly Craig. Molly’s eldest daughter, Doris Pilkington Garimara, wrote the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence, based on her mother’s experience escaping from Moore River Native Settlement. The film is an adaptation of the Garimara’s book.
