Forms of appeal

In the text “An Open Letter to all MPs in Parliament”, Marcus Rashford uses all three modes of appeal. 

Logos

Since Rashford is addressing politicians – a serious and well-educated type of receiver – he relies on logos. He provides plenty of facts and statistical evidence, which support his ideas:

To put this pandemic into perspective, from 2018-2019, nine out of 30 children in any given classroom were living in poverty in the UK. This figure is expected to rise by an additional one million by 2022. In England today, 45% of children in Black and minority ethnic groups are now in poverty. (ll. 43-46)

In this example, statistics highlight how an already flawed system will most likely impact vulnerable people during and after the Coronavirus pandemic. 

Rashford also uses logos when he appeals to reason. When he asks “Political affiliations aside, can we not all agree that no child should be going to bed hungry?” (ll. 34-35), he appeals to readers’ logical...
