Summary

“Popular Girls” by Karen Shepard tells the story of five girls —Stephanie, Kaethe, Alina, CJ, and Sydney— who are in the tenth grade at a private school in New York. They are rich and popular and look down on everyone else. They are intentionally flirty and tease boys and teachers. Some of the boys are their friends, while some others they date or steal from other girls. This Friday, in April 1982, the girls talk about what they are going to do in the evening, to what bars, pubs, and parties they could go using fake IDs.

Stephanie is the leader of the group. The girls smoke and do all kinds of drugs. They wear the latest designer fashion and jewelry and they have big houses with perfect rooms. In their rooms, they have collections of dolls, pearls, glass animals, and posters featuring music bands or New York City.
