Summary

In “Petronella” by Jay Williams, in the kingdom of Skyclear Mountain, three princes are born into each generation of the royal family and each time they are named Michael, George, and Peter. But one year, the third child of the royal family turns out to be a girl, whom they name Petronella. When the girl and her brothers grow up, they go looking for their fortunes in the world, despite the parents and brothers arguing that Petronella should stay at home and wait for a prince.

The three siblings ride their horses into a dark forest and reach a three-way forked road, guarded by an old man.
