Background information

The novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro takes place in an alternate version of England, where human cloning became possible and legal after the Second World War (Chapter 22, 33%). The main characters from the novel are all clones, created for the purpose of donating their vital organs to people who might need them. 

The word clone is used only a few times in the novel, but the reader starts suspecting the truth early on. This truth is nearly confirmed when the novel mentions the possibles: “Since each of us was copied at some point from a normal person, there must be, for each of us, somewhere out there, a model getting on with his or her life” (Chapter 12, 14%). This is the moment when the suspicions about the characters are confirmed, and readers understand that the possibles are the people Kathy and the others are cloned from.
