Discussion: the issue of minorities in the media

Part of your assignment asks you to discuss the issue of minorities in the media. By media we mean mostly the entertainment business, such as films, TV series, or music.

America Ferrera’s talk “My identity is a superpower – not an obstacle” touches upon the issue of minorities in the film industry. Ferrera explores the lack of minority representation and diversity in the film industry and highlights the need for an urgent change. Ferrera, who is a Latina, talks about how her racial identity has prevented her from being offered more serious and complex roles. However, Ferrera does not argue that her Latina identity is to blame, but the film industry’s resistance to change.
