Delivery of the speech

America Ferrera’s talk “My identity is a superpower – not an obstacle” was delivered in 2019 as part of the TED2019 conference titled “Bigger Than Us”. Ferrera appears on stage dressed in an elegant burgundy pantsuit, which gives her a serious and professional appearance. 

Her curly hair is loose and plays an important part in the delivery of her talk. At one point, when she talks about the efforts she made to be accepted by the film industry, Ferrera mentions that she “straightened [her] curls into submission” (l. 38). Her hair being curly now suggests that Ferrera has overcome her belief that her appearance needed to be changed in order to be taken seriously.
