Intention

In her speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2020, Michelle Obama has two main intentions: to persuade the audience to vote for Joe Biden and to inform the audience of Trump’s failure as President of the US. Obviously, these two intentions are connected.

Persuading the audience to vote for Joe Biden

Throughout her speech, Michelle Obama’s intention to persuade the audience to vote for Joe Biden is achieved through ethos. She associates herself with Joe Biden, calling him her friend, when she describes his successful political activity: “I know Joe. He is a profoundly decent man, guided by faith. He was a terrific vice president. He knows what it takes to rescue an economy, beat back a pandemic, and lead our country” (ll. 97-98). This is meant to convince the audience of Biden’s professionalism and empathy.
