Hustvedt’s essay was published in 2006 under the title “Living With Strangers” in the essay collection A Plea for Eros which explores a range of topics, but particularly the human psyche, including Hustvedt’s own psyche. However, the essay was first published in the American newspaper The New York Times in 2002 under a different title: “NEW YORK OBSERVED; Look Away”. This means that Hustvedt’s essay found its initial readership in shape of the New York Times readers, which is a rather wide group of readers in itself as the newspaper is read all over the world.
