Discussion: Living alone and the society

The third part of your assignment asks you to discuss whether it is a positive or negative development for society that more people choose to live alone. Your discussion should be based on one of the texts and should include at least two of the following phrases: on the one hand, on the other hand, for instance, not until, apart from, likewise, finally, in other words.

The phrases that you have to use are known as connectors because they help introduce ideas, examples, opposing arguments, similar arguments, or final arguments. Here are some examples of how you can use each of the phrases:

On the one hand, living alone can make people feel lonelier. On the other hand, living alone can encourage people to socialize more by going out or meeting friends more often.

In what follows, we will outline some of the reasons why living alone can be a positive or negative development for society, presented in the two texts.

Living alone is a positive development for society because: 

  • Living alone can teach people valuable lessons about themselves and their social habits (Text I).
  • It promotes community spirit and civic engagement. People living alone are more likely to volunteer or talk to neighbors and friends (Text II);

  • Some people find living alone depressing or isolating, despite the existence of social media and the internet (Text I);
  • If the number of people living alone increases rapidly, the housing industry, the economy, and the legislation fail to catch up (Text II);
  • The housing industry is currently unable to satisfy people’s combined need for their own place and social connection (Text II);
