Analysis

Here is a brief presentation of the main elements we took into consideration when analysing “In Celebration of Walls” by Frank Lewinberg.

The essay follows a typical structure: title, introduction, main body, and conclusion. The title of the essay is intriguing because it seems metaphorical. We know the writer will praise walls but we do not know what type of walls and where they are placed.

The sender of the text is South African architect and urban planner, Frank Lewinberg. The general receivers of the text are all English-speaking readers with access to the essay. Given that the topics of the text are South African society and Johannesburg residents, the essay was probably intended for them.

Regarding the characteristics of the text, we focused on argumentation, rhetorical devices, forms of appeal, and language. Most of the essay is conveyed using open argumentation and rhetorical devices such as repetition and irony. You can identify all three forms of appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) in the text and its language is easy to understand.
