Characterization of John and Mary

Outer characterization

John and Mary are the main characters of the short story “Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood. Most scenarios refer to them, except for option D and E, which refer to Madge and Fred. However, it could be argued that Madge and Fred are just another version of John and Mary, and that all four characters are only relevant when it comes to the ending of their story.

John and Mary’s outer characterization varies from option to option. The only constant is the characters’ names. These are not chosen by accident, as John and Mary are two of the most common names in the English language. The names, therefore, could lead us to believe that the characters are supposed to represent normal, everyday people.
