Narrator and point of view
The events presented in the novel extract “Grace” by Philipp Meyer are told by a third-person narrator. The narrator is limited and only has access to Grace’s perspective, giving readers insights into her thoughts and feelings.
Throughout the narrative, the narrator uses the stream-of-consciousness technique to get inside Grace’s mind. For example, the technique is used when Grace recalls giving up her studies after the steel mills began laying people off, including her husband Virgil:
