The mother
The mother is one of the main characters of the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid. Although her physical appearance is not presented, several clues suggest that she is a woman living in postcolonial Antigua with her family. The mother has a daughter who is most likely almost a teenager, whom she tries to educate in several areas.
The mother comes across as an experienced and wise woman who can offer advice related to a variety of topics. For example, she seems to be a good housewife, as she instructs her daughter on how to cook, clean, or hem a dress:
