Discussion

Here, we will help you discuss the problems with food waste, as well as possible solutions to this issue. We will also include a comment on a quotation from the video clip, as this will help you in your discussion.

Problems and solutions

In your task, you are invited to discuss the problems with food waste, as well as possible solutions for this issue. In your discussion, we invite you to look at both the video clip and the article. In what follows, we will pinpoint some of the problems and the solutions regarding food waste, as identified in your source material.

Here are some of the problems with food waste, as seen in the video clip and the article:

  • Almost a half of the world’s food production goes to waste each year, mostly because of the ways in which food is harvested, stored, and transported – all in all, because of a lack of infrastructure (Text I);
  • Food is wasted because it is past its “sell by” date and because people do not know it is still safe to eat (Text I);

...

Here are some of the solutions regarding food waste, as presented in the video clip and the article:

  • Developed economies – US or most European countries – focus on efficient farming practices. As a result, the food reaches the consumer more quickly and the risk of food going to waste is diminished (Text I);
  • The supermarkets are trying to influence a more relaxed legislation when it comes to food's visual attractiveness standards when on the shelf. (Text I)
  • Consumers should be educated when it comes to expiration dates because some foods are still good to eat after the "best by" date. (Text II);

...

First, note the paradox in the quotation: although the planet has enough resources to feed every child, a daunting number of children still die every year because of famine. Mostly, this happens because of food waste, which is created by the lack of infrastructure and consumer education.
