Summary

“Father and Son” by Bernard MacLaverty tells the story of a broken relationship between a widower father and his son living in Belfast (Northern Ireland). The father cannot sleep at nights and he goes to work early without eating. The son hears him prepare for work and pretends to be asleep in order to avoid talking to his parent. The father is worried about his son and plans to talk with him during the evening. The man recalls times when his son was only a child and they used to go fishing. He waits for his son until one o’clock in the night. But the son is reluctant. He refuses to talk to his father. The man is worried that his son might have started to use drugs again, as the boy is a recovering drug addict. The son denies it.
