Inner characterization

Farida is a very clever and self-motivated child. She has a natural talent for learning, and she enjoys school activities: “She wanted to know what was written on the board. She wanted to write down the answers. She had the material memorized and it was bristling in her head, jostling to spill over on to the page” (ll. 31-33). This shows that she has a natural desire to learn. In fact, her greatest fear when her eyesight begins to deteriorate is that she will start doing badly in school. 

Farida is also a shy, well-behaved child. She hesitates to speak up for herself, even if by doing so she could improve her situation. She does not complain to her parents about needing glasses.
