In June 2016, the Conservative government of the United Kingdom initiated a referendum calling for the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. The referendum passed by a narrow margin and the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union in 2019. The withdrawal is referred to as Brexit, short for “British exit”.

News articles reported that after the referendum was over, many people used search engines to clarify what exactly Brexit entailed, meaning that they were unsure about what they voted for or against.
