Analysis

In this section, we will highlight the main elements of our analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Sea Change”.

The story follows a linear plot which is mostly concentrated in the main characters’ dialogue. The most important characters in the story are two young people, Phil and an unnamed girl. James, the barman, is a secondary character.

The events take place in Paris, in a café, at the end of a summer. The social setting explores such themes as sexuality, identity, acceptance, and inner transformation.

The events are described mostly through dialogue. The third-person narrator describes the setting, the physical appearance of the characters, and aspects of their interactions with each other. The dialogue is written using simple language without any in-depth explanations or clarifications.
