Imagery and metaphors

In “The Tables Turned” by William Wordsworth, we should easily identify imagery and metaphors, and also some other stylistic elements. Here are some of them:

Personification

Several natural elements are personified in the poem. The sun, for example, is personified through the use of the adjective “his” instead of “its”: “His first sweet evening yellow.” (p. 204, l. 9)

Nature is also personified. The use of the pronoun “she”, together with the use of capitalisation, depicts nature as a beautiful, feminine creature: “She has a world of ready wealth” (p. 205, l. 11)

Metaphors

Wisdom is described through a metaphor. According to the poet, wisdom can only be obtained through being healthy (thus, through leaving books aside and stepping out towards nature) and through being merry...
