The author has chosen to organise the short story in three parts, and each of these parts has its own climactic moment, with each one being stronger than the previous.

The climactic moment from part I comes when Mr White wishes for money using the monkey paw. In part II, the climactic moment is the death of Herbert being announced to the Whites. Finally, the climactic moment of part III is the moment when Herbert apparently returns from the dead and knocks at the door (which is also the climax of the whole story).

The title of the short story indicates that the narrative involves a lucky charm or a talisman, the monkey’s paw. Beginning

The short story begins with a long exposition in which the setting and the characters are introduced, with a detached tone by a third-person narrator: “Without, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlour of Laburnam Villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly.  Father and son were at chess…”

The middle of the short story builds up tension representing the rising action, up to the climax.

Ending

The ending of the story is brief so the falling action and the resolution overlap. The man manages to get the paw and makes the third wish before the wife opens the door. There is no one outside suggesting that the third wish sent the resurrected son back to the dead:
