Differences between Rachel and Marie

When you comment on the differences between the two girls, it is necessary to characterise the protagonist of the story, Rachel, as well. She too goes through a life changing experience in just a couple of hours.

The story is told through her eyes; she is intelligent and reflective, yet innocent and naive at times.

  • Rachel describes Marie, from the way she dresses, judging her from what she knows herself:

“Rachel thought Marie's cardigan was the sort of thing a grandma would wear.” (l. 6)

  • And at times she lets her childish curiosity takes charge:

“It was better to just be friends on the playing field. Yet she was curious to see where Marie lived, and she really wanted to see a fox cub. Maybe they could share it.” (ll. 48-50)
