While the cause of the flood in “Survivor Syndrome” is not made clear, it could be the result of global warming, which is increasingly likely to create disastrous natural catastrophes. Nowadays, many communities around the world –located on coasts and inland – experience floods as a result of rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions.

Like in Jensen’s story, the world has experienced several epidemics and pandemics, such as the 2009 “swine flu” pandemic, which is estimated to have caused as many as half a million deaths worldwide.
