Summary

“Scary Movies” by Stephen Amidon tells the story of a nine-year-old boy In 1968, he and his friend, Kevin, discover the thrill of scary movies. They come to the Roxy Theatre and buy tickets from an African-American who smiles at them. The two boys enter the theatre, where they are taken aback because they are the only white people in there. The narrator notes that their town was marked by a clear racial divide and that African-Americans seldom mingled with white people. They are terrified by the stories they heard from their parents and friends and expect the worst from the African-Americans from the theatre.
