Setting

Originally published in 1978, the short story “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver does not include an exact time or geographical setting, which is a hint that the author meant it to be read as contemporary and universal. The events might as well have taken place in 1978 or nowadays.

Physical setting

However, we do know that the events take place during winter time and that the physical setting represents the house in which the two characters live, with particular attention to the bedroom and the kitchen.

The atmosphere is set from the beginning with a description of the gloomy and dark winter setting which foreshadows the conflict between the two characters and the dramatic ending:

The social setting of the short story simply illustrates the interactions in a relationship which is falling apart.
