Characterisation

The main theme of cultural clashes and the role of the setting become even more evident when we explore Miss Coral’s character and the relationship between her and Mr James. In the following, we have characterised the main character in the short story, Miss Coral, and highlighted some important points about the relationship between Miss Coral and Mr James.

Miss Coral

Already from the beginning of the story we get the impression that Miss Coral is very patient and seems to endure more than she deserves; for example from the director as he criticises her abilities openly at their place of work:

 

“The director was keen that she should not take the redistribution as a sign of promotion, so he liked to hint among her colleagues that she had been withdrawn from teaching on grounds of incompetence. ...
