Cultural clash
The main theme of this short story is the clash between cultures. Miss Coral is Chinese, and Mr James comes from England and brings with him a western culture, which differs a lot from the Chinese culture. This theme is evident in different aspects of the story. In the following we have highlighted some of the points that are important when you analyse the main theme in this short story.
Miss Coral picks up Mr James in the airport and the differences between the two become evident already during the taxi drive back to the city. He sleeps in the taxi, and Miss Coral’s prepared welcome is thus wasted on the driver. Even though it is not mentioned, it is possible to detect how this behaviour seems odd or impolite to Miss Carol:
“In the taxi on the way back to school, he sleeps. She watches him, wasting her welcome speech on the driver. It is an honour to welcome you to China, Mr James.” (ll. 43-44)
